Shayan Israel, 1966

Shayan, born in Amsterdam, Holland. Based in Israel.
Shayan is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on ceramics, glass blowing, and woodworking. Drawing inspiration from ancient techniques, Shayan specializes in the Japanese Naked Raku method, a practice that embodies the principles of ease, comfort, pleasure, and happiness. Rooted in 16th-century Japan and influenced by Zen Buddhism, this technique celebrates the beauty of imperfection.
Creating each piece by hand, Shayan employs the slab roller method and incorporates glass into the ceramic works. The pieces are meticulously polished and fired in a gas-fed kiln at a temperature of 930 degrees. This unique firing process allows for a surprising degree of unpredictability, ensuring that no two creations are alike. The thrill of working under extreme conditions and the anticipation of unknown outcomes fuels Shayan’s passion for art, resulting in captivating and distinct works that invite viewers to appreciate the journey of creation.
